David Cameron launches schools policy in Hackney

Launching the first Green Paper in the Conservative Party’s Opportunity Agenda in November 2007, David Cameron said:

“Mossbourne Academy is the perfect place for us to launch our schools policy because it says so much about the future of education. You don’t need me to tell you: this is a great school. But I want to put it on the record for the media. We’re in a disadvantaged area, and this school has an even higher-than-average number of students on free meals, with special needs, with English as a second language. And yet nothing about this school is disadvantaged. You can look at the results and they’re impressive enough. But what really hits you is the atmosphere here. You see it in this amazing building – the great legacy of Sir Clive Bourne and a wonderful place to learn. You feel it in the classrooms – kids in blazers and ties who stand up when an adult enters. You hear it from the teachers – dedicated professionals with a passion for their subject and a passion to pass it on.

This place has a simple message. It says to the world that kids from tough backgrounds are not destined to fail. And it says to those kids, this is your school, this is your future, and we’ll do whatever it takes to help you – but one thing we’ll never do is make excuses for you.”

All British citizens must be subject to British laws

Baroness Warsi has described the comments made by Archbishop Rowan Williams about Sharia law as “unhelpful”, saying they would add to the confusion that already exists in our communities. The Shadow Minister for Community Cohesion and Social Action explained the important principle was that of “equality”, with people of all backgrounds and religions being treated equally before the law. She said freedom under the law allows respect for some religious practices, but stressed:”Let’s be absolutely clear – all British citizens must be subject to British laws developed through Parliament and the courts.”
